New Moon No. 42, Fall

LUMEN  LETTERS

Lightning strikes - nature is brutal, beautiful, & everything in between
I am a forest, and a night of dark trees: but he who is not afraid of my darkness, will find banks full of roses under my cypresses.

Friedrich Nietzsche
Dark moon blessings, dear luminous ones -

As we near the darkest day of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere, I feel myself being drawn to, and into, the darkness.

Seeking the darkest night sky, to gaze up upon the brightest starlight.

Cozying up in a dark nook of my home, the warm glow of a salt lamp, hot tea, and my wildest dreams keeping me sweet company.

Getting lost in movement, my body being danced by the music I feel pulsing through my soul.

I paint a picture of beauty with my words, but the shadows are not always welcomed. For all of these enchanted moments merging with the Dark, come moments challenged by the sometimes overwhelming depths of the Dark. 'Tis the nature of dancing with the darkness - she brings great comfort, and intense discomfort. This is her gift.

By the light of the dark moon, will you receive her blessings?

The other day, as the dark curtain of night time closed in on the setting sun, I was curating my December playlists for movement sessions and group classes when I stumbled upon an album that was particularly moving. I was familiar with this artist, and even had several of her songs saved on playlists, but had never heard songs from her album, By the Light of the Dark Moon. Approaching the new moon, and feeling that draw to the dark, I listened to the album from start to end, each song plucking at a different soul string; every word hitting home.

While taste in music is very personal, and I'm sure not all of you will feel quite the way I did while listening to Ayla Nereo's songs, I know some of you will.

DECEMBER // dark

Embrace the blanket of darkness that wraps itself around this transitory month, delivering us from fall to winter.

In the Northern Hemisphere, we encounter the shortest days and longest nights as we approach the winter solstice. When attuned to the cycles of nature, this place among the wheel of the year coaxes us to slow down, settle inward, and metaphorically embody death as we prepare for the rebirth of the world with the return of the light. The symbolism of darkness, in all its myriad forms, is not something to shy away from or be frightened by, but rather to consciously engage with and even feel a sense of comfort from - here lies the rich terrain our movement practice will traverse in December.

It’s time to dance with the darkness.
